Abstract: | Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet PCs, have become widely used information platforms of contemporary individuals. In this setting, mobile devices can also serve as convenient means for establishing interaction between historical places and visitors to enrich cultural tourism offer. Providing for a visitor an exact multimedia-based information at a historical location can be achieved by an augmented reality (AR) technology-based application performed on his mobile device. In this paper, we present an application based on the AR technology aimed at providing information about historical events in the years inscribed at four sides of the Monument to the Liberators located at the main square of the City of Niš, Serbia. By recognizing reliefs at the bottom of the monument each of which corresponding to an important event in the decades long fighting for liberty, the visitor can be immersed in a historical context through an especially prepared multimedia content. Technical aspects of implementation of the application and the way of on-site informing the visitors on its availability are also briefly discussed. |
