This paper utilizes the basic concept of the Jayant quantizer model in order to provide the development of the novel adaptive piecewise uniform scalar quantizer. Particularly, the novel model avails the Jayant manner of maximum amplitude adaptation, which means according to the one word memory and with the use of the backward adaptive technique. The novelty of the proposed model is based on introduction of the step size multiplier. Since the novel model is equal to the initial Jayant quantizer model when the mentioned step size multiplier has the unit value, it is obvious that the proposed model presents the more general model of adaptive linear non uniform quantizers. Finally, since one of the main goals when designing quantizers is to provide as high as possible quality, i.e. as low as possible distortion, an analysis will be conducted in order to provide optimal values of the step size multipliers that correspond to the different bit rates.en_US
