In this article a novel adaptive quantizer is presented based on optimal companding technique and correlation. Adaptation is achieved by adapting the input of the fixed or non-adaptive quantizer according to the estimated and quantized gain on each particular frame. In such a way better quantizer adaptation to the varying input statistics is provided. The speech signal is modeled by Laplacian probability density function. Theoretical and experimental results are provided which point out the benefits that can be achieved using the proposed algorithm. The main advantage is a compromise between signal to quantization noise ratio and bit-rate.en_US
